How do I stop spam?

Spam means emails you don't want. Spam can include unwanted advertising, pornography and scams designed to cheat you out of your money.

Sometimes spam comes from companies or websites you've already registered with. Most reputable companies will have an unsubscribe option in their emails. Clicking on unsubscribe will stop the company from sending you unwanted emails.

Often, however, spam comes from people or companies you've never heard of. They guess, buy or steal your email address.

Spam from MrBuyGuy Members

If you receive unwanted emails from another MrBuyGuy member, you can make a complaint at the Information Commissioner's Office website.

Here are some tips to help reduce spam:

  • Don't publish your email address on the Internet.
  • Don't choose an email address that spammers could guess easily, like ‘your_name@hotmail.com’.
  • Only give your main email address to people and companies you trust. If a website you're going to use only once asks you for an email address, get a new, free email address just for that site.
  • Read the privacy policies of the websites you visit. A good privacy policy should guarantee that the website will never sell your email address. See MrBuyGuy's privacy policy.
  • Use the highest anti-spam setting on your email program. But be careful. This could send some emails you do want into your junk folder. Be sure to check your junk folder regularly.
  • If you've already received spam, don't open it. Opening spam will tells the spammer that your email address is valid. They'll  keep on spamming you and could sell your email address to other spammers
  • Turn off email images. You can do this by changing your email program's default settings. A spammer can use an image within an email to tell if you've opened it.
  • Don't forward any marketing emails to your friends, or they'll be spammed, too.

Your Internet Service Provider and email program will be able to provide you with more tools for reducing spam.

This can lead to your account being restricted or suspended.
